When does guardianship transfer from the closest relative to the more distant one, with clarification?

The guardianship of marriage (wilayat al-nikah (definition)) transfers to the more distant guardian in specific situations, such as the death of the closer guardian, his absence in a way that makes consultation impossible, his refusal to marry off his female ward ('adhl), his suffering from a mental defect (insanity, senility, imbecility), his being interdicted due to profligacy, or his being a non-Muslim while his ward is Muslim. When the closer guardian is characterized by some of these attributes, the guardianship transfers to the more distant guardian.
