Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory, and severing them is among the gravest of forbidden acts. There is no specific measure or prescribed method for maintaining kinship ties in Islamic law; rather, it is achieved through anything that is customarily considered a connection. Its degrees vary according to custom and circumstances, and it includes financial support, fulfilling needs, visiting, corresponding, and offering greetings. The least of these is abandoning estrangement and offering greetings. Its performance varies according to ability and need, with some acts being obligatory and others recommended. Severing kinship ties does not invalidate prayer, fasting, or any other acts of worship, nor does it necessitate their repetition. Prayer assists in obedience and avoiding sins, and it is the key to all good.
