O Sheikh, how can I treat people with good manners?
Treating people with good manners means treating them as you would like to be treated, in ways that are permissible by the Sharia. It also means associating with them kindly, with a cheerful face, gentle demeanor, subtle guidance, and returning evil with good. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fear Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good one that will erase it, and deal with people with good manners." The heaviest thing to be placed on the Scale [on the Day of Judgment] is good manners, which is a characteristic of prophets, messengers, and the best of believers. They do not return evil with evil, but rather they pardon, overlook, and do good. Among the meanings of good manners are generosity, doing good deeds, showing a cheerful face, enduring harm, suppressing anger, and forgiving mistakes.
