Is it obligatory to fulfill the vow that the student made to herself to strive in her studies in order to bring joy to her parents and obey them?

A vow to strive hard in studies does not require fulfillment according to the majority of scholars, because it is a vow concerning a permissible act, and in their view, a vow is only binding if it is purely for the sake of drawing closer to Allah. The Hanbalis hold that the person who made the vow has the choice between fulfilling it or offering an expiation for an oath.
