How did the Prophet, peace be upon him, receive the Hadith Qudsi?

Scholars have differed regarding the Hadith Qudsi (Sacred Hadith): whether both its wording and meaning are from Allah, or only its meaning. Some have favored the view that both its wording and meaning are from Allah, emphasizing that it differs from the Qur’an in its characteristics, and that the wisdom behind distinguishing between them lies in the miraculous nature of the Qur’an. Both opinions agree that the Hadith Qudsi is a revelation from Allah, and it is revealed through the known methods of revelation, such as inspiration (Ilham), speech from behind a veil, sending an angel, and truthful dreams.
