What is the expiation for an adulteress and an adulterer? And will the prayer of a girl be answered against the man who was alone with her, or will her deed not be accepted because she is an adulteress? And is adultery the establishment of a complete illicit relationship, or does it include other things?
Adultery is of two types: one that necessitates a prescribed punishment (hadd) and one that does not. The expiation for adultery is repentance to Allah Almighty, by regretting the sin, abandoning it, and resolving not to return to it. It is better to conceal oneself. Whoever repents, Allah will accept his repentance, and his good deeds will be accepted. His evil deeds may be transformed into good deeds, as Allah Almighty says: "Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous deeds. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful." The prayer of an adulteress against an adulterer, if it is rightful, such as in the case of rape, is hoped to be accepted. Otherwise, Allah does not accept the prayers of the unjust for their injustice, as in the hadith: "The supplication of a servant continues to be answered as long as he does not pray for a sin or cutting off ties of kinship."
