What is Islam's stance on Joseph the Carpenter? Was he the fiancé or husband of the Virgin Mary, peace be upon her? And if he did not exist, why did Ibn Kathir mention him, and why do Christians mention him?

Firstly: A Muslim must preserve his faith and the soundness of his innate disposition, and distance himself from doubts and tribulations. It is not permissible to look into books of innovation (bid'ah) or misguidance except for someone qualified in Islamic knowledge, for the purpose of refuting them. Otherwise, reading them will lead the reader into confusion and deviation.

Secondly: There is no mention of Joseph the Carpenter in the Quran or the authentic Sunnah, and what has been narrated about him comes from the Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions). It is mentioned that he was a righteous man who believed Mary (peace be upon her) and assisted her and her son Jesus.

Thirdly: The Jews accused Mary of fornication with Joseph the Carpenter, while Muslims believe that Jesus is Allah's servant and messenger, and His word which He bestowed upon Mary, the virgin, the pure. They reject the exaggeration of the Christians and the shortcomings of the Jews concerning him.
