What is the ruling on selling water?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to sell water if it is in a public well or river that is not owned by anyone, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Muslims are partners in three things: pasturage, water, and fire." The water referred to here is rainwater, springs, and unowned rivers. However, if the water is owned by a person and he has acquired and possessed it in a container or a pool, then it is permissible to sell it because it has become his property through acquisition.
