The ice bucket challenge is a reprehensible phenomenon alien to Muslims, originating as a Western campaign to collect donations for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This challenge is a blameworthy imitation of what the Shari'ah has forbidden, from several perspectives: First: The Shari'ah encouraged consoling the poor with money and the sick with care and supplication, without afflicting oneself. This act is foolishness and a deficiency in intellect. Second: Allah encouraged giving charity with a willing heart and condemned spending for the sake of people and showing off (riya'). This challenge resembles a vow by which money is extracted from a miser, and it involves taking money by the sword of shyness (compulsion), just as the Prophet ﷺ forbade the food of those who compete due to its boasting and showing off. Third: This act involves harming oneself or casting oneself into destruction, as pouring ice-cold water can cause stress to the heart. The Prophet ﷺ approved of the Companion who performed tayammum and did not bathe for fear of perishing. Allah Almighty combined in His Book the command to spend with complete willingness and the prohibition of killing oneself and casting oneself into destruction.
