How does one propose marriage to a woman, what steps should be followed, should one speak directly with her or send someone on behalf of the suitor, and how did the Messenger, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, propose marriage?

It is permissible for a Muslim man to propose marriage directly to a righteous woman, provided he observes the Islamic etiquettes and ensures there is no fitna (temptation/strife). Alternatively, he may delegate one of his trustworthy female relatives to speak with her on his behalf, which is preferable and safer. If she agrees, he should then propose to her guardian (wali), and it is recommended to see her during the engagement period. It is better to exercise patience and not rush if he strongly suspects a rejection, in order to avoid embarrassment. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Khadijah and Maymunah through an intermediary, and proposed directly to Umm Salamah. If the marriage does not materialize, he should turn away from her and beware of falling into the forbidden, and entrust his affair to Allah.
