When a couple separates, the custody of young children goes to their mother, unless there is an impediment to her custody. Some scholars have held that a girl, after the age of seven, should be with her father, and a boy should be given a choice. Others have held that all children, after the age of seven, should be given a choice to live with their father or their mother. In case of a dispute regarding custody, the matter should be referred to the court for resolution.
