What is the ruling on wearing a necktie?

A Muslim should distinguish himself in his appearance and dress from non-Muslims, so as not to wear anything specific to them. It is preferable to dispense with a necktie, but if one needs it, there is no harm, provided that it is not made of natural silk or contains crosses or images of animate beings.
