What is the ruling on lying when apologizing for not attending a wedding banquet due to the inability to present a gift?
If a person is invited to a wedding feast with a personal invitation, it is more likely obligatory to accept, unless there is an excuse that nullifies this obligation. For instance, if there is suspicion regarding the food, or if only the wealthy are invited, or if there are forbidden acts present such as alcohol, or if the invited person apologizes and their excuse is accepted. Among the excuses also is the fear of the invited person for their honor or their property. If not bringing a gift would harm one's honor, then it is permissible not to attend. Lying is forbidden except in cases of necessity, and it can be substituted with allusions and equivocation.
