Is throwing (talqin) the deceased after burial by placing a stone on the grave and tapping it three times, saying: "O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, remain upon what you were upon in the worldly abode: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, and that you are pleased with Allah as your Lord, and with Islam as your religion," repeated three times, followed by reciting Surahs Yasin and Tabarak and some short surahs, Al-Fatiha, and supplication, originated from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, or is it an innovation?

According to Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, it is permissible to perform talqin for the deceased after burial. However, the other mentioned matters, such as tapping with pebbles, reciting Surat Ya-Sin and Surat al-Mulk, some short surahs, and collective supplication, are considered additional innovations for which there is no evidence of their legitimacy. It is better to restrict oneself to seeking forgiveness for the deceased and supplicating for their steadfastness after burial.
