Is a period that occurs every 12 or 13 days, seven months after childbirth, with menstrual pains and blood color, considered menstruation or abnormal bleeding (istihadah)? And are the first drops of blood that precede the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda') by one day considered menstruation from the time they appear?
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah chose the view that there is no minimum or maximum limit for menstruation, nor for the minimum period of purity between two menstrual cycles. According to his view, regular bleeding is menstruation. If a woman sees spots of blood and then purity, she performs ghusl and prays. If the blood returns, she reverts to being in a state of menstruation. However, according to the majority of scholars, if the blood returns before the minimum period of purity between two menstrual cycles has passed, and the total duration of the two bleeding periods and the purity exceeds fifteen days, then she is considered to be in a state of istihadah (non-menstrual bleeding) and should revert to her regular habit if she has one. Perhaps the easier approach in this situation is to act upon the view of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.
