How is a thin beard treated in ritual ablution (wudu') with regard to wiping (masah) and running fingers through (takhlil)?

If the beard is thin and the skin beneath it is visible during conversation, then it must be washed, and water must reach the skin beneath it. Wiping it is not sufficient. This applies to both the beard hair and the sideburns. However, if the beard is thick such that the skin is not visible, then only its outer surface must be washed, and it is not obligatory for a man to wash its inner part. As for a woman and a hermaphrodite (khunthā), washing its inner part is absolutely obligatory.
