This type of competition for money is forbidden by Islamic law, except in specific cases: archery, camel racing, and horse racing. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There is no prize except in archery, or hoof (camel/horse racing)." Some jurists have analogized to this competitions for memorizing the Quran, , Fiqh, and other beneficial sciences. If the knowledge is of this nature, then competition for a prize is permissible; otherwise, it is not.
