Is it permissible to lie in critical situations to avoid revealing secrets, knowing that lying is forbidden?

Lying is one of the reprehensible and forbidden traits. If a Muslim is compelled to report something contrary to reality, he should use allusions (ma'arid); for in them there is room for avoiding falsehood, and they are not considered lying. An allusion is when one uses an ambiguous word that the listener understands to mean something other than what the speaker intends. Lying is permissible if there is a legitimate benefit that cannot be achieved except through it, provided it does not harm others.
