Imam Al-Bukhari began seeking knowledge of at the age of nine. He memorized tens of thousands of hadiths before reaching puberty. He traveled to most of the Eastern kingdoms in pursuit of hadith, narrated from their scholars, and wrote from over a thousand scholars, none of whom were anything but hadith masters.

Ibn Hajar described him as "the mountain of memorization, and the Imam of the world in the jurisprudence of hadith." Al-Bukhari's condition for inclusion in his was that the hadith must have a connected chain of narration () through reliable, precise, and long-term students of those from whom they narrated.
