It has been previously explained that backbiting is forbidden and how to expiate it through sincere repentance. It is more prudent to seek forgiveness from the wronged person if possible and if it does not lead to a greater harm. Forgiveness for past (transgressions) is permissible, unlike for future (transgressions). Regret and apologizing to the wronged person are sufficient for expiating backbiting if the wronged person forgives.
