However, if the unlawful wealth was acquired through theft or usurpation, and its rightful owners are known, then it must be returned to them. If it is impossible to identify its owners or return it to them, then it must be given in charity on their behalf. It is permissible for the person to give it in charity to themselves according to their need if they are poor.
