How will the earth testify on the Day of Resurrection, against whom, about what will it testify, and what are the characteristics and traits of the hypocrites?
The exegetes differed in their interpretation of Allah's saying: "On that Day, it will relate its news." Al-Qurtubi mentioned three interpretations regarding this: 1. That it will relate the deeds of the servants performed upon its surface, and this is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet (marfu'). 2. That it will relate what it has brought forth of its burdens. 3. That it will relate the advent of the Hour when man says: "What is wrong with it?"
Shaykh Atiyah Salem affirmed that this relating is real, and that the earth will be made to speak to inform about the deeds of every human being upon it. The manner of its relating will be by one of three ways: that Allah transforms it into a speaking animal, or that Allah creates speech within it, or that a clear manifestation from it takes the place of speech. As for the characteristics of the hypocrites, some of them are mentioned in Surat Al-Baqarah from verse 7 to verse 20.
