When is zakat due on a residential plot of land that you own but do not live in, and which you did not offer for sale until last Eid al-Fitr: is it upon selling it or upon the passing of a full year (hawl) on it?

The answer

Zakat is not obligatory on gifted real estate merely by intending to sell it, according to the majority of scholars. This is because trade is earning money through exchange, whereas accepting a gift is acquiring without exchange. Therefore, there is no Zakat on the plot of land gifted to you, even if you intend to sell it. However, if you sell it and a year passes over its price, then Zakat is due on it if it reaches the [Zakat] threshold by itself or when combined with other money or trade goods.
