Is zakat obligatory on green wheat that is sold as "fereek," and who is responsible for paying it: the farmer or the merchant?

Zakat is obligatory on fareek (grains before harvesting and threshing) if it reaches the nisab, which is three hundred prophetic sa‘s (approximately 612 kilograms), and it is obligatory upon the owner of the crop. It is permissible to estimate the quantity of fareek by kharṣ (estimation by experts), or to give out the zakat from its price after selling it. One-tenth of the harvest must be given if it is irrigated by rainwater or without cost, and one-half of one-tenth if it is irrigated by machinery.
