What is the ruling on praying between the pillars in a spacious mosque?

Praying between the pillars and columns of a mosque is permissible for the Imam and for one praying alone, due to the action of the Prophet (peace be upon him). As for the congregant (ma'mum), he should not pray between them if there is ample space in the mosque, so as not to interrupt the rows, based on the saying of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "We used to be forbidden from praying between the pillars and were chased away from them." However, if the mosque becomes crowded with worshippers, then there is no objection for the congregants to pray between the pillars.
