What is the ruling on one who caused the separation of a couple by informing the husband about his wife’s conversations with foreign men, which led to their divorce and each of them marrying another, given that the informant has repented with sincere repentance, and is he considered sinful when people accuse this girl [of wrongdoing]?

If a person informs a woman's husband that she is speaking with foreign men, with the intention of preventing her from committing a forbidden act, there is no blame on him, even if it leads to their separation. However, if he sought to separate them without a legitimate religious purpose, or slandered her honor unjustly, and then repented, then repentance between him and Allah is sufficient if seeking her forgiveness or her husband's forgiveness would lead to greater mischief. He should strive to pray and seek forgiveness for them. If he had spoken ill of her to some people, he should disavow his previous statements and speak well of her to them. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that it is not a condition to inform the person whose honor was assailed; rather, repentance, speaking well of the person who was backbited or slandered in the places where it occurred, and seeking forgiveness for them are sufficient.
