Is it permissible for a woman observing the 'iddah (waiting period) for widowhood to speak on the phone with non-mahram men for condolences or other purposes?

It is forbidden for a young woman to offer condolences to a non-mahram man or to answer his call if there is a fear of fitna (temptation/strife). It is disliked for a man to initiate condolences to her or to respond to her. However, if there is no fear of fitna, then there is no harm in her offering condolences or responding to those who offer her condolences. Generally, it is permissible for a woman, including one observing her iddah (waiting period), to speak with a non-mahram man over the phone or by other means, provided Islamic guidelines are observed, such as not speaking in a soft and alluring manner.
