Should the slain be washed before burial?

Washing a deceased Muslim is a communal obligation (fard kifayah) by the consensus of Muslims. The obligation is lifted from the rest if some individuals perform it. An exception to this is the martyr who dies on the battlefield; he is neither washed nor prayed over, due to Jabir's narration concerning the martyrs of Uhud.
