The answer

It is permissible to temporarily conceal the news of a person's death from his elderly mother for her own good, in order to alleviate the shock, by gradually informing her and reminding her of divine decree and patience, just as Umm Sulaim did with Abu Talha. However, concealing the news from her permanently is not permissible, as it deprives the deceased of her supplication, deprives her of the reward for patience, necessitates lying, and may lead to the loss of rights.
