What is the ruling on frequent swearing by Allah, and is expiation obligatory for such an oath?

Frequent swearing by Allah, if it is from the category of "laghw al-yameen" (unintentional or vain oaths) that occurs on people's tongues without the intention of making an oath, then Allah will not hold one accountable for it, and no expiation is required for it, due to His saying: "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths [laghw al-yameen]." However, if the oaths are made with a firm intention, then expiation is required. A Muslim should avoid frequent swearing, as it indicates weakness of faith and a lack of reverence for Allah. Allah has forbidden this, saying: "And do not make [your oath by] Allah an obstacle against your righteousness" and "And do not obey every frequent swearer [of oaths], a humiliated one."
