What is the ruling on catching the Eid sermon but missing the Eid prayer itself, and how is the Eid prayer performed?

The Eid prayer is a Sunnah, not obligatory, according to the majority of scholars. It is not obligatory to make up for it, but some scholars consider it recommended. Whoever wishes to make it up may pray it in its original form with the extra takbirat (proclamations of "Allahu Akbar"), or without them, though performing the takbirat is preferable. Some scholars hold that whoever misses the Eid prayer should pray four rak'ahs (units of prayer), as narrated from Ibn Mas'ud and Ali, or two rak'ahs like a supererogatory prayer. Others, such as Al-Hasan, An-Nakha'i, Malik, Ash-Shafi'i, and Ahmad, believe it should be prayed with takbirat just as the Imam prays it, which is what Anas ibn Malik did. The difference of opinion on this matter is based on the conditions of congregational attendance, residence, and the Imam's permission for the Eid prayer. Those who do not stipulate these conditions permit an individual, traveler, woman, or slave to make it up, either in congregation or individually, without a sermon. Those who do stipulate these conditions do not permit making it up in its original form, similar to the Friday prayer. The Eid prayer differs from the Friday prayer, as it can be made up after its time has passed, and the sermon is not a condition for it.
