Is it permissible to follow a non-Muslim (an infidel or a person of the book) for academic purposes only?

There is no objection to benefiting from the beneficial worldly sciences of the disbelievers. One is rewarded for learning them if the intention is sincere and directed towards reform and the advancement of Muslims. It is permissible to emulate a disbeliever in their diligence within the field of worldly sciences, provided that the Muslim's faith is not affected, and no forbidden act is committed. This must be accompanied by a keen effort to gain understanding in religious matters and to know that the best role model is the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, as Allah Almighty said: "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day."
