What is the legitimate role of children toward their parents, the father who assaults the mother by breaking her hand and kicking her, and the mother who is known for her sharp tongue and disrespect toward her husband?

Marriage in Islamic law is based on love, compassion, and cooperation. It is not permissible for either spouse to harm the other through insults, abuse, or striking. The best of men do not strike their wives. Both parties have wronged each other, and they must repent to Allah and reconcile, for reconciliation is best. The role of children is to honor their parents, reconcile between them, and treat them kindly, even if one of them has erred, for Allah has commanded kindness to them even if they are polytheists.
