What is the ruling on selling Quranic verses for profit, with the intention of directing this profit to support Islamic programs and institutions?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is forbidden to sell frames and posters that contain Qur'anic verses, because hanging them entails legal prohibitions, among which are: using the Qur'an for decoration rather than guidance, the bid'i (innovative) seeking of blessings by hanging rather than recitation, violating the practice of the righteous predecessors, using them as a pretext for polytheism, such as believing they are amulets, using the Qur'an as a commercial tool, gilding them with gold, tampering with the writing of verses in an unreadable manner, exposing them to disrespect during transport or cleaning, and the belief of some negligent individuals that they suffice them from fulfilling their religious duties. This is what major scholars have fatwas on.
