What is the ruling on persisting in a sin about which there are doubts regarding its unlawfulness until the matter becomes clear?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible for a Muslim to undertake an action whose ruling he is ignorant of, or about whose prohibition he has doubt. Rather, he must inquire about it and refrain from undertaking it until he knows its legal ruling. The aforementioned action necessitates sin and accountability, for his failure to inquire about its ruling. The fundamental principle for the ignorant person is not to undertake an action until he knows Allah's ruling concerning it, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge."
