Marriage without a guardian (wali) is invalid according to the majority of jurists, but it is valid if conducted in a country that applies the Hanafi school of thought, and if the contract is performed by a judge or a marriage officiant.

Sadism (striking the wife during intercourse) is permissible if it is with her consent and is not excessive, while avoiding the face and dangerous areas.
