Is prostrating after prayer for supplication Sunnah?

The Sharia does not prescribe drawing closer to Allah Almighty through prostration (sujud) unless the prostration is part of prayer, or for a specific reason such as prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw), prostration of recitation (sujud al-tilawah), or prostration of gratitude (sujud al-shukr). As for prostration for the purpose of supplication (du'a), there is no evidence in the Sharia indicating its permissibility or desirability. Rather, what is established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in numerous successive narrations is that he would raise his hands when supplicating, and he encouraged and enjoined this, saying: "Indeed, your Lord, blessed and exalted be He, is Modest and Generous. He is too modest to turn away empty the hands of His servant who raises them to Him." Therefore, prostrating for the purpose of supplication would be an innovation, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not do it. Scholars have denounced and forbidden this singular prostration.
