It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he used to say upon breaking his fast: "Thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, Allah willing." It might be understood from this hadith that it specifically pertains to breaking the fast with water. Scholars have mentioned that the wisdom behind breaking the fast with dates is that they are sweet and strengthen the eyesight, which may weaken due to fasting. As for water, it moistens the liver and removes any dryness it might experience from fasting.
