How do we listen attentively to the Quran?

Listening attentively means to listen while refraining from speaking. Allah Almighty has commanded His believing servants to listen and pay close attention to the Holy Quran, promising them mercy for doing so. He says: "And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." [Al-A'raf: 204]. It is obligatory for the worshiper behind the Imam to listen attentively to the recitation of the Quran during prayers recited aloud. This is one of the most important means that aids in understanding it and contemplating its meanings. The Quran was revealed to be recited, its meanings understood, and applied in people's lives. This can only be achieved by reciting it with contemplation and listening to it with humility, which helps to achieve the primary purpose of the Quran's revelation: contemplation, understanding, and application. Allah Almighty says: " [This is] a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessing, that they may ponder over its verses, and that those of understanding may remember." [Saad: 29]. And He says: "Do they not then contemplate the Quran? And if it had been from [anywhere] other than Allah, they would have found within it much inconsistency." [An-Nisa: 82]. And He says: "Do they not then contemplate the Quran, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?" [Muhammad: 24]. Thus, the required attentive listening is to pay close attention to the recitation of the Quran and not be distracted from it by anything else.
