Is it permissible for a girl to marry her mother's paternal uncle?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to marry one's maternal aunt's paternal uncle (عم الأم) because she is a محرم (unmarriageable kin), given that she is the daughter of his brother's daughter. The forbidden categories of marriage are mentioned in a verse from Surah An-Nisa: "Forbidden to you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters..." There is no difference between a direct brother's daughter and the daughter of his daughter or the daughter of his son.
