Is it permissible for a person afflicted with a psychological illness, who suffers from shortness of breath and difficulty sleeping, to pray in his home?
Congregational prayer is obligatory according to the majority of scholars, and it is not a requirement to perform it in the mosque. However, one should not surrender to psychological illness that might create the illusion that people are bothered [by one's presence]. Rather, one must strive against their lower self and preserve the reward of praying in the mosque. It is not permissible to abandon congregational prayer in the mosque except for a legitimate Shar'i excuse that permits it. If going to the mosque is extremely difficult, you may be excused. It is advised to consult a trusted doctor for treatment, in compliance with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) command to seek medical treatment.
