The answer

A vow can be an oath and a pledge, or an oath only. Your swearing by a vow which entails an obligation of obedience and an act of worship to Allah the Almighty is, according to the more preponderant opinion, both an oath and a pledge. It is obligatory to fulfill it as long as you are able. The fasting of David (peace be upon him) is the best of fasting, which is fasting one day and breaking fast the next. This is from the of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which he encouraged his Ummah to observe.
