Which yields greater reward: abundant supererogatory prayers, abundant recitation of the Noble Qur’an, or abundant ذكر (remembrance of Allah)?

The preference of deeds depends on two principles: First, prayer is superior to reciting the Qur'an in other than prayer, and reciting the Qur'an is superior to performing adhkar (remembrance of God). Second, a less virtuous deed may become more virtuous due to two factors: either it is associated with something that makes it superior, such as a specific time or place, or the person is unable to perform the more virtuous deed or does not find presence of heart in it, making the less virtuous deed better for them. Therefore, the prescribed adhkar at specific times take precedence, and reciting the Qur'an is better during the night vigil (qiyam al-layl) if one is able to do so; otherwise, whatever one can manage. Prayer, however, is superior to both.
