What should a person do when speaking to another who swears by other than Allah, and is there any sin incurred as a result?

Swearing by other than Allah is among the unanimously agreed-upon prohibitions, ranging between wickedness and disbelief, and between minor and major shirk. A Muslim must denounce whoever swears by other than Allah, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest of faith." And based on his saying: "Indeed, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever is going to swear, let him swear by Allah or remain silent." And based on his saying: "Whoever swears by other than Allah has disbelieved or committed shirk." The denouncement should be in a manner that is believed to bring about change, using wisdom, encouragement, and deterrence, and by clarifying the impermissibility and danger of swearing by other than Allah.
