Was Ma'bad al-Juhani a Companion (Sahabi), and did any of the scholars of Rijal (biographical evaluation) state that he was? Is he related to Ibn Sirin, from whom he narrated? And from which books can his biography be known?

Scholars have differed regarding Ma'bad ibn Khalid al-Juhani: whether he was a Companion (Sahabi) or not, and whether he was one person or more. Some mentioned that he was a Companion and narrated from Abu Bakr and Umar, and that he died in 72 AH. Others denied his companionship. Al-Jawzajani said that he was the head of the Qadariyyah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani preferred the view that he was a Companion, and that he was different from Ma'bad al-Juhani the innovating Qadari. His narrations are few and not found in the Six Books.

As for Ma'bad al-Juhani the innovator, he was the first to speak of predestination (qadar) in the latter days of the Companions, and the Companions disavowed him, such as Abdullah ibn Umar, who said: "If one of them had gold equal to Mount Uhud and spent it [in charity], Allah would not accept it from him until he believes in predestination."
