The employee is a private hireling (اجير خاص), and it is not permissible for him to spend his time on anything other than work, except with the employer's permission. He may read the Quran if he has free time, provided that this does not distract him from his work. He should read in the workplace, not in the prayer room (musalla), so that work is not disrupted. It is not permissible for him to leave before the end of working hours except with the employer's permission.
