The question

What is the ruling concerning a woman whose menstrual period stopped for seven days, so she performed ghusl, and then three days later saw black blood with an odor, knowing that she is afflicted by sorcery and is performing the obligatory Hajj? Is this considered istihada ( метроrhagia)? And must she perform ghusl and pray?

The answer

If a woman with a regular period becomes pure, and then bleeding resumes after three days, this recurring blood is not considered a separate menstrual period because the interval between the two bleedings is less than the minimum period of purity (15 days). Instead, it is an addition to her usual period. Scholars differ on the ruling concerning this additional bleeding: 1. Some consider it dysfunctional bleeding (istihadah), not menstruation, unless this increase recurs three times, in which case it is considered menstruation and a change in her habit, provided that the total period (from the beginning of the first menstruation to the end of the renewed bleeding) does not exceed 15 days. Otherwise, it is istihadah. 2. Others consider the recurring blood as a continuation of menstruation, and she must refrain from prayer and whatever else is forbidden to a menstruating woman, provided that the total period does not exceed 15 days. If it exceeds that, it is istihadah, in which case she refers to distinguishing between blood types. If she cannot distinguish, she reverts to her usual period.

Circumambulation (Tawaf) is not valid during menstruation according to the majority of scholars, and it is not permissible for a menstruating woman to stay in the mosque.
