The waiting period (iddah) for a widow is by giving birth if she is pregnant, or four months and ten days if she is not pregnant. She must refrain from adornment, perfume, jewelry, and ornate clothing. She should not leave her home except for an excuse or necessity. It is permissible for her to go out during the day for her needs. If she feels lonely in her husband's home, she may go to someone she finds comfort with, provided that she does not spend the night anywhere but in her own home. She is permitted to meet and converse with men according to the regulations of Islamic law.
