Is flipping a coin to make personal decisions permissible or forbidden?

What you are doing—making decisions based on flipping a coin—is impermissible, as it falls under the category of seeking divination by arrows (istīqsām bi al-azlām), which is forbidden in Islamic law. Allah Almighty says: {And that you seek divination by arrows. That is a grave disobedience.} (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:3). Instead of this absurdity, Allah Almighty has legislated for us Istikhara (seeking guidance from Allah). So, whoever desires a permissible matter and is hesitant about it, should perform Istikhara to Allah Almighty, then proceed with the matter, relying upon Him. Ibn Taymiyyah clarified that seeking divination by arrows includes everything by which one seeks guidance, such as striking with pebbles, barley, tablets, and other similar practices. He forbade this and encouraged seeking guidance from the Creator (Istikhara) and consulting with creation, and relying on legal evidence.
