Does the Quran permit a man to beat his wife?

The Quran contains no indication that a man is permitted to bite his wife. Rather, the Quran enjoins treating wives with kindness and living with them honorably. It states that wives have rights similar to their obligations, with an added right for the husband due to his guardianship (qawamah). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also advised treating wives with kindness, stating that the best among people are those who are best to their families, and he clarified that a husband feeding his wife is an act of charity. Islam has permitted a man to strike his wife with a non-painful (ghayr mubarrih) blow if she becomes rebellious and defiant, but only after admonition and abandonment in bed. The purpose of such striking is correction, not harm or humiliation.
